MBA graduates start online scrap collecting service

TRICHY: As collecting scrap has become a lucrative business, four 30-year-old MBA graduates along with a couple of people have ventured into an online junk collecting service called Kuppavandi.com.

People who want to get rid of the trash can register on their website. A team of five is involved in collecting the trash from the users who register their requests online.

The idea to start Kuppavandi.com evolved in 2012 and it was established in 2013. The user-friendly website hosts attractive content to persuade its visitors to make money by throwing out junk like old newspaper, milk covers, broken things and plastic wastes, right at their doorstep.

The service is offered to both individuals and organisations. Apart from collecting scrap, the team offers services like electrical assistance, plumbing and carpentry.

The four - M Chandrakumar, B Sasikumar, S Sathish Kumar and S Kamaraj - hit on the idea of getting into scrap collection business when they met in Chennai.

Kamaraj said though it was difficult to collect funds initially, things started shaping up when the business plan started paying off a few months back.

He added that nowadays, as residents are finding it difficult to sell their old house wares at shops, the idea of picking the scrap at the doorstep has developed.

However, winning the people's trust was quite a task for the team. Sathish Kumar said it was difficult during the start as residents were quite apprehensive about the idea.

The scrap is collected using a small pickup vehicle and loaded at the city's warehouse. From there, it is later dropped at the respective points.
